Single-mode fiber (SMF) uses a narrow core for long-distance 1310–1330nm laser transmission, while multimode fiber (MMF) has a larger core for short-range 1300nm LED or VCSEL transmission.

Core Differences and Light Propagation

Single-mode fiber (SMF) has a small core diameter of about 8–10 µm, allowing only one light mode to propagate. This minimizes modal dispersion, enabling high-fidelity transmission over long distances, typically up to 40 km at 1310nm or 1330nm wavelengths using laser sources . SMF is ideal for backbone networks, long-haul telecom links, and high-speed data centers. Multimode fiber (MMF) has a larger core, usually 50 µm or 62.5 µm, which supports multiple light modes. This allows LEDs or VCSELs to transmit light at 850nm or 1300nm/1330nm, but modal dispersion limits the effective distance to around 2 km at 1300nm . MMF is commonly used for short-range connections within buildings, campuses, or data centers.

  • MMF: Bandwidth is limited by modal dispersion; OM3, OM4, and OM5 fibers improve performance, but distances remain short (up to 2 km at 1300nm/1330nm) for high-speed links .

Deployment Considerations

  • Cost: SMF is more expensive due to precise manufacturing and laser sources, but cost-effective for long-distance links. MMF is cheaper and easier to terminate, suitable for short-range, high-density environments .
  • Safety: SMF lasers require careful handling for eye safety, whereas MMF LEDs are less hazardous .
  • Compatibility: Ensure SFP modules match the fiber type and wavelength; 1330nm MMF is mostly legacy, while SMF 1330nm is compatible with modern long-haul systems .
