Which optical module emits light and which receives light

The Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA) emits light, while the Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA) receives light.

Light Emission: TOSA

The TOSA is the component in an optical module responsible for emitting light. It converts electrical signals into optical signals using a light source such as a laser diode (LD) or a light-emitting diode (LED). The TOSA includes an optical interface, a monitoring photodiode, and driver circuitry that modulates the light according to the input electrical signal. Laser diodes are commonly used for high-speed, long-distance transmission due to their higher output power and efficiency, while LEDs are suitable for short-distance, low-speed applications due to lower cost and longer lifespan .

Light Reception: ROSA

The ROSA is the component that receives optical signals transmitted through the fiber. It converts the incoming light back into electrical signals using a photodetector, typically a PIN photodiode or an avalanche photodiode (APD). The ROSA also includes a trans-impedance amplifier (TIA) and post-amplification circuitry to strengthen the weak electrical signal for further processing. APDs provide higher sensitivity than PIN photodiodes, improving the module's ability to detect low-intensity light .

Summary

In fiber optic communication, TOSA emits modulated light signals into the optical fiber, and ROSA receives these signals, converting them back into electrical form for processing. Together, these assemblies enable high-speed, long-distance data transmission with minimal loss and interference .
