Residual current switch in the secondary distribution box

A residual current switch (RCD/RCCB) in a secondary distribution box protects people and equipment by detecting leakage currents and disconnecting the circuit immediately.

Purpose and Function

A residual current device (RCD), also known as a residual current circuit breaker (RCCB) or ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), is designed to monitor the current balance between the live (phase) and neutral conductors. Under normal conditions, the current flowing into the circuit through the phase conductor equals the current returning through the neutral conductor. If a difference occurs, indicating a leakage current to earth (for example, through a person or faulty insulation), the RCD trips and disconnects the circuit almost instantly, typically within 25–40 milliseconds for currents above 30 mA, preventing electric shock and potential injury .

Operation in a Secondary Distribution Box

In a secondary distribution box, which distributes power from the main distribution board to sub-circuits or specific areas, the RCD is installed to protect multiple downstream circuits. The device uses a differential current transformer: the phase and neutral conductors pass through the transformer's primary windings, and the secondary winding is connected to the tripping mechanism. Under normal operation, the magnetic fluxes generated by the currents cancel each other, and the RCD remains closed. When a leakage occurs, the fluxes no longer cancel, generating a residual current in the secondary winding that triggers the switch to open, cutting off power to the affected circuits .

Installation and Wiring

  • The phase (L) and neutral (N) conductors of the circuits to be protected pass through the RCD.
  • The RCD can be two-pole (disconnecting both L and N) or four-pole for three-phase systems.
  • In a secondary distribution box, the RCD is typically installed after the main breaker and before the sub-circuit breakers, ensuring that all connected circuits are protected from leakage currents .
  • Regular testing using the test button is recommended to ensure proper operation.

Benefits

  • Human safety: Rapid disconnection prevents electric shock.
  • Equipment protection: Reduces risk of fire or damage due to insulation faults.
  • Compliance: Meets modern electrical safety standards and automatic disconnection of supply (ADS) requirements . In summary, installing a residual current switch in a secondary distribution box is essential for enhancing safety in residential, commercial, or industrial electrical installations by detecting leakage currents and disconnecting power before harm occurs.
