288 Optical Cable Color Sequence

A 288-fiber optical cable uses the TIA-598-C 12-color sequence repeated across 24 buffer tubes, with each tube containing 12 fibers.

Color Sequence Overview

The TIA-598-C standard defines a universal 12-color sequence for fiber identification:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose
  12. Aqua In a 288-fiber cable, fibers are grouped into 24 buffer tubes, each containing 12 fibers. The tube itself is assigned a color from the same 12-color sequence, and the fibers inside the tube follow the same 12-color order. This allows unique identification of all 288 fibers.

Tube and Fiber Mapping

  • Tube 1 (Blue): Fibers 1–12 (Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, Aqua)
  • Tube 2 (Orange): Fibers 13–24 (Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, Aqua)
  • Tube 3 (Green): Fibers 25–36 (Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, Aqua)
  • Tube 4 (Brown): Fibers 37–48 (Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, Aqua) This pattern continues sequentially through Tube 24 (Aqua), covering all 288 fibers. To identify a specific fiber:
  1. Determine the tube number: Divide the fiber number by 12 and round up.
  2. Determine the fiber position within the tube: Subtract (tube number - 1) × 12 from the fiber number.
  3. Assign colors: Tube color comes from the 12-color sequence, and fiber color is the corresponding position in the 12-color sequence.

Example

  • Fiber #150:
    • Tube number = 150 ÷ 12 = 12.5 → Tube 13 (Red)
    • Fiber position in tube = 150 − (12 × 12) = 6 → White fiber
    • Result: Fiber #150 is the White fiber in the Red tube.

Practical Notes

  • This system ensures unique identification for all fibers in high-density cables.
  • It is widely used in data centers, FTTH deployments, and high-density backbone networks.
  • The outer jacket color may indicate fiber type (e.g., yellow for single-mode, orange for multimode), but the internal fiber sequence always follows the TIA-598-C standard. By following this method, technicians can accurately trace, splice, and patch fibers in a 288-fiber cable without confusion or errors .
