Color sequence order of 12-core optical fiber cable

The standard 12-core optical fiber color sequence is: Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate (Gray), White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose (Pink), Aqua.

Standard 12-Fiber Sequence

For a 12-core optical fiber cable, each fiber is color-coded to allow easy identification during installation and maintenance. The TIA/EIA-598-C standard specifies the following order:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose (Pink)
  12. Aqua This sequence is universally applied to single 12-core cables, as well as to fibers within ribbon cables and loose-tube cables .

Application in Higher Fiber Count Cables

For cables with more than 12 fibers (e.g., 24, 48, 144 fibers), the 12-color sequence repeats in groups of 12. In loose-tube cables, each tube may contain 12 fibers following the same sequence, and the tubes themselves are often color-coded using the same 12-color pattern. For example, in a 48-fiber cable, fibers 1–12 follow the standard sequence, fibers 13–24 repeat the same colors, and so on .

Practical Notes

  • Ribbon cables: Fibers are arranged side-by-side in a flat ribbon, and each fiber follows the 12-color sequence.
  • Loose-tube cables: Each tube contains 12 fibers, and the tube color may also follow the 12-color standard. Additional markings (stripes or rings) are used to distinguish repeated sequences.
  • Connector identification: While fiber colors identify individual cores, connector boot colors indicate polish type (UPC or APC) and fiber mode (single-mode or multimode), which is critical for proper network performance . By following this standardized color sequence, technicians can reliably identify fibers, maintain polarity, and ensure accurate splicing or termination in both indoor and outdoor fiber optic installations.
