Pigtail and Fiber Optic Transceivers

LC or SC connector single-mode or multimode pigtails are commonly used for fiber optic transceivers, with UPC or APC polish depending on the transceiver requirements.

Overview

A fiber optic pigtail is a short optical fiber cable with a factory-terminated connector on one end and a bare fiber on the other end, designed to be fusion or mechanically spliced to the network cable in the field . The connector end plugs directly into a transceiver, patch panel, or optical distribution frame, ensuring low insertion loss and high return loss .

Connector Types

The most common connector types for transceivers are:

  • LC (Lucent Connector): Small form factor, widely used in high-density applications and data centers .
  • SC (Subscriber Connector): Larger, push-pull design, often used in telecom and older equipment .
  • ST (Straight Tip): Bayonet-style connector, less common in modern transceivers . The choice of connector must match the transceiver port to ensure proper connectivity.

Fiber Type

  • Single-mode fiber (OS1/OS2): Used for long-distance transmission and high-speed networks; most transceivers in enterprise and data center environments use single-mode pigtails .
  • Multimode fiber (OM1, OM3, OM4): Suitable for shorter distances, such as within a building or campus network .

Polish Type

  • UPC (Ultra Physical Contact): Provides low insertion loss and is common for standard single-mode connections .
  • APC (Angled Physical Contact): Reduces back reflection, often required for high-precision or analog optical systems . The polish type must match the transceiver specification; APC connectors are not backward compatible with UPC ports.

Practical Considerations

  • Length: Pigtails typically range from 1 to 3 meters, depending on installation needs .
  • Splicing: The bare fiber end is permanently spliced to the incoming fiber using fusion splicing for minimal signal loss .
  • Color Coding: Helps identify fiber types and maintain proper connections in high-density environments . Selecting the correct pigtail ensures optimal network performance, low signal loss, and reliable connectivity between the fiber backbone and transceivers.
