Definition and Purpose

An overcurrent relay (OCR) is a protective device that operates when the current exceeds a predetermined threshold, known as the pickup current. Its primary purpose is to protect electrical equipment such as transformers, generators, motors, and cables from damage caused by short circuits, overloads, or phase-to-ground faults, which generate heat proportional to the square of the current (P = I²R) and can lead to insulation failure or conductor melting .

Working Principle

Overcurrent relays operate solely based on current. The current coil in the relay produces a magnetic field proportional to the current flowing through it. Under normal conditions, this magnetic effect is insufficient to move the relay's element. When the current exceeds the set limit, the magnetic force overcomes the restraining spring, causing the relay contacts to change position and send a trip signal to the circuit breaker .

Types of Overcurrent Relays

Overcurrent relays are classified based on their response time and operating characteristics:

  • Instantaneous Overcurrent Relay (ANSI 50): Trips immediately when current exceeds the set threshold, with no intentional delay. Ideal for high-magnitude faults near the power source .
  • Time-Overcurrent Relay (ANSI 51): Trips after a time delay that depends on the magnitude of the overcurrent. Higher currents result in faster tripping. This includes:
    • Definite Time Overcurrent Relay: Fixed time delay regardless of current magnitude.
    • Inverse Time Overcurrent Relay: Trip time decreases as current increases, often implemented as IDMT (Inverse Definite Minimum Time) relays .
  • Ground Fault and Neutral Overcurrent Relays (50G, 50N, 51N): Detect overcurrent in ground or neutral paths for additional protection .

Applications

Overcurrent relays are widely used in high-voltage systems, substations, overhead feeders, and underground feeders. They ensure quick fault clearance, minimize equipment damage, and maintain system stability. Modern relays are often digital or microprocessor-based, allowing adjustable trip characteristics, multiple protection functions, and integration with supervisory control systems .
