  1. Inspect the Module: Ensure the optical module is in an anti-static bag, check labels and serial numbers, and confirm there are no scratches, dents, or deformations. Verify the optical port is protected by a dust cap and select a module compatible with your network requirements .
  2. Prepare Tools and Environment: Use anti-static equipment such as wrist straps, gloves, and mats. Ensure the installation area is clean, dust-free, and maintains appropriate temperature and humidity. Prepare optical fiber cleaning tools like MPO cleaners or lint-free wipes .

Installation Steps

  1. Wear Anti-Static Protection: Ground yourself using a wrist strap or anti-static gloves to prevent electrostatic discharge that could damage the module .
  2. Align the Module: Hold the module by its sides and align it with the slot. For QSFP+ modules, ensure the top side with the L-shaped notch faces upward .
  3. Insert Gently: Push the module horizontally into the port without excessive force. A spring mechanism or latch may produce a “snap” sound when fully seated .
  4. Verify Installation: Gently pull the module to confirm it is securely installed. If it can be pulled out easily, repeat the insertion process .
  5. Engage Latch Mechanism: If the module has a locking tab, ensure it is fully engaged to prevent accidental disconnection .
  6. Power On and Monitor: After installation, power on the equipment and check status indicators to confirm the module is recognized and functioning correctly .

Additional Considerations

  • Single-Fiber BIDI Modules: Must be used in pairs with complementary transmit and receive wavelengths to ensure proper communication .
  • Hot-Swappable Modules: Many SFP, QSFP, and QSFP-DD modules are hot-swappable, allowing insertion or removal without powering down the system, but always follow temperature and handling guidelines to avoid damage .
