  • OS1: Tight-buffered, indoor use, maximum distance up to 10 km, typically yellow jacketed .
  • OS2: Loose-tube, outdoor use, supports distances up to 100 km, also yellow jacketed .
  • G.652: Standard single-mode fiber for general telecom applications.
  • G.657 (A1/A2): Bend-insensitive fibers suitable for FTTx and indoor installations, allowing tighter bending without signal loss . Single-mode fibers typically use laser sources and are more expensive to terminate than multimode fibers but provide superior performance over long distances .

Multimode Fiber (MMF)

Multimode fibers are optimized for shorter distances and use a larger core (50–62.5 µm) that allows multiple light modes. They are commonly used in data centers and LANs. Models include:

  • OM1: 62.5 µm core, supports up to 300 meters at 1 Gbps.
