Fiber Optic Cable Splitting Operation Steps

Fiber optic cable splitting is primarily achieved using passive optical splitters, with PLC and FBT technologies being the main methods for dividing optical signals into multiple outputs.

Overview of Fiber Optic Splitters

A fiber optic splitter is a passive device that divides a single incoming optical signal into two or more outgoing signals or combines multiple signals into one. Splitters operate without electricity, relying on light physics, which makes them cost-effective and reliable for networks like FTTH, GPON, and EPON . They are essential for sharing a single fiber among multiple users while maintaining signal quality.

Main Splitting Methods

1. PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuit) Splitters

PLC splitters use integrated waveguide technology on a quartz substrate to evenly distribute optical signals from one input fiber to multiple outputs . Key features include:

  • Uniform light distribution across all output fibers, ensuring consistent signal quality.
  • High split ratios, supporting up to 1×64 or more, suitable for large-scale networks.
  • Wavelength insensitivity, making them compatible with WDM systems.
  • Compact design, allowing installation in junction boxes or data centers. PLC splitters are manufactured using semiconductor processes such as photolithography and etching to create optical waveguides on the chip, with fiber arrays precisely aligned at both ends . They are ideal for long-distance and high-density applications but have higher production costs compared to FBT splitters.

2. FBT (Fused Biconical Taper) Splitters

FBT splitters are made by fusing and tapering two or more optical fibers through high-temperature heating, then recoating the fused area to form a complete splitter . Characteristics include:

  • Customizable split ratios, typically 1:2, 1:4, or 1:8, suitable for small to medium networks.
  • Lower cost for low-channel applications.
  • Simple manufacturing, but performance can degrade over long distances or with high split ratios. FBT splitters are commonly used in short-distance deployments or where cost efficiency is a priority.

Split Ratios and Architectures

  • Split ratios define how many outputs a single input fiber is divided into, e.g., 1×2, 1×4, 1×8, 1×16, 1×32, or 1×64 . Higher ratios reduce the optical power per output, typically by ~3 dB for each doubling of outputs.
  • Centralized splitting places one or more splitters at a central location, allowing flexible customer assignment via jumpers.
  • Distributed splitting deploys splitters closer to end users in closures or pedestals, with fixed customer assignments .

Applications

  • FTTH networks: A single fiber can serve multiple homes using a 1:32 or 1:64 PLC splitter.
  • Data centers: High-density PLC splitters distribute signals between servers and switches.
  • Outdoor deployments: Weatherproof PLC or FBT splitters (IP65-rated) are used for pole-mounted or underground installations .

Summary

Fiber optic cable splitting is achieved using PLC and FBT splitters, each suited for different network scales and requirements. PLC splitters are preferred for high-density, long-distance, and wavelength-insensitive applications, while FBT splitters are cost-effective for smaller networks. Split ratios and deployment architectures (centralized vs distributed) further influence network design and performance .
