Roadside electrical distribution boxes generally produce minimal air pollution under normal operation, but malfunctions can lead to localized emissions of potentially harmful substances.Normal Operati...
Electrical distribution boxes, which are part of the low-voltage and high-voltage distribution network, are typically designed to operate with practically zero emissions of air pollutants during normal functioning. The network components, including transformers and switchgears, are largely sealed and insulated, preventing the release of chemical substances into the environment under standard conditions (MDPI, 2024) .
Pollution concerns arise primarily when malfunctions occur, such as insulation breakdown, overheating, or electrical arcing. In these cases, certain gaseous emissions may be released, including trace amounts of insulating oil vapors, ozone, or other byproducts of electrical faults. Scientific literature on the environmental and health impacts of these emissions is limited, but monitoring sensors are sometimes used to detect early signs of component failure to prevent potential exposure (MDPI, 2024) .
While electrical boxes can emit pollutants under fault conditions, vehicle emissions remain the dominant source of roadside air pollution. People living near busy roads are exposed to higher levels of nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds from cars and trucks, which are strongly linked to respiratory and cardiovascular health issues (EPA, 2024) . In comparison, emissions from distribution boxes are sporadic and localized, and generally much lower in magnitude than traffic-related pollutants.
For the general public, roadside electrical distribution boxes are not a significant source of air pollution under normal operation. The main concern arises only during component failures, which are rare and typically managed through maintenance and monitoring. In contrast, vehicle emissions remain the primary source of near-roadway air pollution, posing a more substantial health risk to nearby communities.
