Operating Principle

Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) are periodic variations in the refractive index along the core of an optical fiber, created using ultraviolet laser irradiation . When light travels through the fiber, the FBG reflects a specific wavelength, known as the Bragg wavelength, while allowing other wavelengths to pass. Temperature changes alter the refractive index and the grating period, causing a shift in the Bragg wavelength, which can be precisely measured to determine temperature . The Bragg wavelength shift is influenced by the thermo-optic coefficient and the thermal expansion coefficient of the fiber material .

Design and Packaging

FBG temperature sensors can be embedded in composite materials, concrete, or mounted on steel surfaces.
