How Fiber Optic Transmission Works

Fiber optic transmission involves sending data as pulses of light through a core made of ultra-pure glass or plastic. The light is guided along the fiber by total internal reflection, which occurs because the core has a higher refractive index than the surrounding cladding, keeping the light confined within the core . At the transmitter, electrical signals are converted into optical signals, and at the receiver, the light is converted back into electrical signals for processing . This method allows extremely high-speed data transfer over long distances with minimal signal loss .

Types of Fiber Optic Cables

  • Single-Mode Fiber (SMF): Has a narrow core, ideal for long-distance communication, commonly used in telecom backbones and carrier networks .
  • Multimode Fiber (MMF): Has a wider core, suitable for short-distance applications like data centers and LANs .
