The PoE switch wiring sequence involves preparing the Ethernet cable, arranging wires according to T568B standard, terminating the RJ45 connector, connecting to the PoE switch, and allowing the switch to detect and power the connected device.

Step-by-Step Wiring Sequence

1. Cable Preparation Strip approximately one inch of the outer jacket from the Category 5e, 6, or 6A cable, taking care not to nick the internal copper conductors . 2. Untwisting and Wire Alignment Straighten the four twisted pairs and arrange them according to the T568B standard:

  • White-Orange
  • Orange
  • White-Green
  • Blue
  • White-Blue
  • Green
  • White-Brown
  • Brown 3. Connector Seating Trim the wires to about half an inch and insert them fully into the RJ45 connector, ensuring the jacket is secured under the strain relief tab . 4. Crimping Use a high-quality ratcheting crimp tool to compress the gold-plated contacts into the wires, ensuring a gas-tight connection . 5. PoE Switch Connection Plug the terminated cable into a PoE-enabled port on the switch. The switch acts as Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) and will perform a detection phase to verify that the connected device is IEEE 802.3af/at compliant . 6. Detection and Classification The switch sends a low-voltage signal to the Powered Device (PD) to determine its power requirements. Once detected, the switch ramps the voltage to the full 44–57V DC range, supplying power over the Ethernet pairs . 7. Power Delivery Power is delivered either over the data pairs (Alternative A) or the spare pairs (Alternative B) depending on the PoE standard used. The switch continuously monitors power usage to prevent overload . 8. Grounding Verification Ensure the network rack and shielded cabling (if used) are properly grounded to prevent electrostatic discharge from damaging the PoE circuitry .

  • Pair 1 & 2 (pins 1 and 2) and Pair 3 & 6 (pins 3 and 6) are commonly used for data and power in Alternative A.
  • Pair 4 & 5 (pins 4 and 5) and Pair 7 & 8 (pins 7 and 8) are used for power in Alternative B .
