How to install a butterfly-shaped optical cable reel

Installing a butterfly-shaped optical cable reel requires careful handling of the reel, proper securing to a surface, and controlled deployment of the flat ribbon fiber to prevent damage and signal loss.

Step 1: Prepare the Reel

  • Remove the reel from its shipping box by cutting and discarding foam spacers and lifting the reel using a two-person lift through the triangular openings in the side plates .
  • Remove any shipping bolts securing the reel to the wooden plate, taking care not to lay the reel on the FORJ connector exit side .
  • Inspect the reel and cable for any physical damage before installation .

Step 2: Secure the Reel

  • Mount the reel to a solid surface using at least four M8 or 5/16” bolts. You can secure it from the top using the 8.4mm diameter holes in the chassis cross angles or from the bottom using the tapped holes .
  • Ensure the reel is stable and cannot tip over during cable deployment.

Step 3: Connect the Cable

  • Connect the deployment cable to the non-rotating connectors on the reel's side or to the pigtail in the drum exit port .
  • Slide the exit cover into place, ensuring it snaps securely. If it does not, lift the trailing edge while pushing it in until seated .

Step 4: Deploy the Cable

  • Rotate the drum 180° clockwise by hand and secure the cable to the cable tie-down block using a zip tie .
  • Adjust the drum brake to the desired tension: free rotating for rewinding, drag for controlled unwinding, or locked to hold the drum in place .
  • Use a crank handle to wind or unwind the cable as needed, maintaining a smooth, controlled motion to prevent kinks or twists .

Step 5: Handle the Butterfly-Shaped Fiber

  • Butterfly-shaped cables are flat ribbons with multiple fibers. Avoid bending the cable below its minimum bend radius and prevent twisting or S-shaped loops .
  • For long deployments, lay the cable in a figure-8 pattern to reduce mechanical stress and prevent kinking .
  • If fusion or ribbon splicing is required, ensure proper alignment and use specialized equipment for low-loss connections .

Step 6: Environmental and Safety Considerations

  • Keep the cable away from high temperatures, sharp edges, and metallic power lines .
  • Perform installation above 5°C; if the cable has been stored in colder conditions, allow it to acclimate to at least 20°C for 24 hours before deployment .
  • Follow local building codes and safety regulations, especially for aerial or underground installations .

Step 7: Final Checks

  • After deployment, verify that the cable is properly secured and tensioned.
  • Inspect all connections, splices, and terminations to ensure low-loss signal transmission .
  • Ensure the reel and cable are stable and protected from environmental hazards during operation. By following these steps, you can safely install a butterfly-shaped optical cable reel while maintaining the integrity of the fiber and ensuring reliable network performance.
