Common features include dust-proof design, IP65 protection, integrated splice cassettes, and fiber management rods to maintain proper bend radius and prevent signal degradation .

Drop Cable Characteristics

Drop cables are the final segment of the optical distribution network, connecting the optical splitter in the distribution box to the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) at the customer premises . They typically contain 1 to 4 fibers, often using G.657 bend-insensitive fibers for flexible routing inside buildings. Drop cables can be aerial, underground, or directly buried, and may come pre-terminated with connectors or require splicing at both ends .

Splicing Methods

  1. Fusion Splicing: This method fuses the fiber ends using heat, resulting in low attenuation (~0.05 dB) and a permanent, reliable connection. It is preferred for long-term installations and high-performance networks .

  • Protection: Close the splice tray and secure the box to protect against dust, moisture, and mechanical stress. Many boxes provide IP65 protection for outdoor use .
