Structure of Optical Fibers

An optical fiber consists of three main components: the core, cladding, and buffer coating. The core is a thin, transparent medium (usually glass or plastic) that carries light signals from the transmitter to the receiver, with diameters ranging from 5 µm to 100 µm depending on the fiber type (single-mode or multi-mode) . Surrounding the core is the cladding, which has a lower refractive index to ensure total internal reflection, keeping light confined within the core . The buffer coating is a protective plastic layer that shields the fiber from physical damage and environmental factors, typically increasing the fiber diameter to 250–300 µm .

Structure of Optical Cables

Optical fibers are bundled into cables with additional protective layers. These include a strengthening layer (often aramid fibers like Kevlar), a jacket for environmental protection, and sometimes light-absorbing materials to reduce crosstalk between fibers . Cables may be designed for indoor, outdoor, or long-haul applications, with specific standards ensuring durability and reliability under different conditions .

Types of Optical Fibers

  • Single-mode fiber (SMF): Has a small core (~9 µm) allowing only one light mode to propagate, ideal for long-distance, high-speed communication with minimal dispersion .
  • Multi-mode fiber (MMF): Has a larger core (50–100 µm) supporting multiple light modes, suitable for shorter distances like within buildings or data centers .

Performance Characteristics

  • High bandwidth and speed: Optical fibers transmit data at the speed of light in glass (~180,000–200,000 km/s), enabling extremely low latency .
  • Low signal loss: Attenuation is measured in decibels (dB); modern fibers typically have 3 dB/km at 850 nm and 1 dB/km at 1300 nm .
  • Immunity to electromagnetic interference: Unlike copper cables, optical fibers are not affected by EMI, making them ideal for noisy environments .
  • Security: Fiber optics are difficult to tap without detection, enhancing data security .
