Switch configuration inside the distribution box

Configuring a distribution switch involves connecting via console, setting up VLANs, assigning IP addresses, and linking access switches for proper network traffic aggregation.

Step 1: Connect to the Switch

Use a console cable (often a rollover cable) to connect your computer to the switch. Open a terminal emulator like PuTTY and select the appropriate serial connection speed (commonly 9600 bps) to access the switch CLI (Command Line Interface) for configuration .

Step 2: Initial Setup

• Power on the switch and verify that all indicator lights are functioning.
• Erase previous configurations if using a spare switch (e.g., delete flash:vlan.dat on Cisco switches) to start fresh .
• Enter privileged EXEC mode by typing enable and then access Global Configuration Mode with configure terminal .

Step 3: Set Hostname and Domain

Assign a hostname to identify the switch in the network and configure a domain name if required. This helps in managing multiple switches and VTP (Virtual Trunking Protocol) domains .

Step 4: Configure VLANs

• Create VLANs for different network segments using commands like vlan <ID> and assign names.
• For distribution switches connected to routers, configure Layer 3 interfaces for each VLAN (e.g., set l3-interface vlan.0) to allow IP routing .
• Ensure that VLANs on access switches match the distribution switch configuration for proper traffic forwarding .

Step 5: Assign IP Addresses

Assign an IP address to the management VLAN to allow remote management via Telnet, SSH, or web interface. Example: interface vlan 1 followed by ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 .

Step 6: Configure Access and Security

• Set enable passwords and console/Telnet passwords to secure access.
• Optionally, configure AAA servers for centralized authentication.
• Limit which IP addresses can access the switch management interface .

Step 7: Connect Access Switches

Aggregate traffic from multiple access switches into the distribution switch. Ensure trunk ports are configured correctly to carry multiple VLANs and that the distribution switch is aware of all VLANs from connected access switches .

Step 8: Verify Configuration

• Use commands like show vlan, show ip interface brief, and show vtp status to verify VLANs, IP addresses, and VTP domain settings.
• Test connectivity between access switches and the distribution switch to ensure proper routing and traffic flow .

Step 9: Save Configuration

Save the configuration to prevent loss after a reboot using write memory or copy running-config startup-config . Following these steps ensures that your distribution switch is properly configured, secure, and ready to manage traffic from multiple access switches efficiently.
