Manual Processing Method for Ceramic Fuse

Ceramic fuses can be manually processed by shaping ceramic plates, applying patterned conductive inks, and performing controlled electroless copper plating to achieve precise, durable fuse elements.

Materials Required

  • Ceramic plate: Typically alumina (Al₂O₃) or zirconia (ZrO₂) for high thermal and electrical stability .
  • High-melting-point glass powders: Borosilicate or bismuth glass for adhesion and pattern stability .
  • Metal powders: Nickel (Ni) or iron (Fe) for conductive patterns .
  • Oils or binders: To mix with glass and metal powders for ink preparation .
  • Electroless copper plating solution: For metallizing the patterned areas .

Step-by-Step Manual Process

  1. Surface Preparation
    • Clean the ceramic plate thoroughly to remove dust and grease.
    • Optionally, lightly polish the surface to improve adhesion of inks.
  2. Base Coating
    • Prepare an ink mixture containing 50–70% borosilicate glass powder and 30–50% oil.
    • Manually print or brush this ink over the entire ceramic surface.
    • Dry the coating at a controlled temperature to form a stable base layer .
  3. Pattern Printing
    • Mix a second ink with 20–50% bismuth glass, 50–70% Ni or Fe powder, and 30–50% oil.
    • Using a fine brush, stencil, or screen, apply the ink only to the fusible strip pattern.
    • Dry carefully to avoid smearing and ensure dimensional accuracy .
  4. Electroless Copper Plating
    • Immerse or carefully apply electroless copper plating solution to the patterned areas.
    • The copper selectively deposits on the metal-glass ink, forming the conductive fuse element.
    • Rinse and dry the plate to remove residual chemicals .
  5. Sintering (Optional for Manual Method)
    • Heat the ceramic plate at a temperature below the ceramic's melting point to densify the glass and metal powders.
    • This step improves adhesion, durability, and electrical performance .
  6. Final Inspection and Finishing
    • Check the dimensions and continuity of the fusible strip.
    • Trim or polish edges if necessary to meet tolerance requirements.
    • Optionally, coat with a protective layer to prevent oxidation and improve weather resistance .

Notes for Manual Processing

  • Precision control: Manual methods require careful control of ink thickness, drying time, and plating conditions to maintain fuse accuracy.
  • Safety: Handle metal powders, glass powders, and plating chemicals with appropriate protective equipment.
  • Small-scale production: This method is suitable for prototyping or low-volume production where automated printing and plating are unavailable . By following these steps, a high-precision ceramic fuse can be manually fabricated with reliable electrical performance and mechanical durability, suitable for testing or specialized applications.
