Angle Measurement Using Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors

Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors can measure angles by detecting strain or displacement-induced wavelength shifts in optical fibers, offering high precision and immunity to electromagnetic interference.

Principles of FBG-Based Angle Measurement

FBG sensors consist of periodic variations in the refractive index along the core of an optical fiber, which reflect a specific wavelength of light known as the Bragg wavelength. When the fiber experiences strain or bending, the grating spacing changes, causing a measurable shift in the reflected wavelength. By strategically placing FBGs on a structure or a mechanical lever, angular displacement can be inferred from the differential strain along the fiber, allowing precise angle measurement .

Sensor Configuration for Angular Detection

  1. Bending-Based FBGs: FBGs can be mounted on flexible substrates or cantilever beams. When the substrate bends due to angular motion, the FBG experiences tensile or compressive strain proportional to the angle, which is detected as a wavelength shift .
  2. Multi-FBG Arrays: Multiple FBGs can be inscribed along a single fiber to measure strain at different points. By analyzing the relative shifts, the angle of rotation or tilt can be calculated with high accuracy .
  3. Sensitivity Enhancement: Advanced designs, such as Exceptional Point (EP)-engineered FBGs, can significantly increase sensitivity to small angular changes by exploiting singular spectral responses, enabling detection of minute rotations .

Advantages of FBGs for Angle Measurement

  • High Precision: FBGs can detect microstrain changes, translating to angular resolutions in the millidegree range .
  • Electromagnetic Immunity: Unlike traditional electronic sensors, FBGs are unaffected by electromagnetic interference, making them suitable for aerospace and industrial environments .
  • Multiplexing Capability: Multiple FBGs can be integrated along a single fiber, allowing simultaneous measurement of angles at different locations .
  • Durability: Silica-based FBGs are robust and can operate in harsh environments, including extreme temperatures and corrosive conditions .

Applications

FBG-based angle measurement is widely used in:

  • Structural Health Monitoring: Measuring tilt or rotation of bridges, beams, and mechanical joints .
  • Robotics and Aerospace: Detecting joint angles or wing deflections with high precision .
  • Precision Engineering: Monitoring angular displacement in micro-mechanical systems or optical alignment setups .

Implementation Considerations

  • Temperature Compensation: Since FBGs are sensitive to both strain and temperature, dual FBG configurations or sensitivity matrix approaches are often used to isolate angular strain from thermal effects .
  • Calibration: Accurate angle measurement requires calibration of the strain-to-angle relationship, considering the geometry of the mounting substrate and fiber placement.
  • Interrogation Systems: High-resolution optical interrogators are necessary to detect small wavelength shifts corresponding to minute angular changes . FBG sensors provide a versatile and highly sensitive platform for angle measurement, combining optical precision with robustness, making them ideal for applications where conventional electronic sensors may fail.
