Optical modules encode information by modulating light through intensity, phase, polarization, or multi-dimensional coding, converting optical signals into detectable patterns for communication or sensing.

Optical Modulation and Encoding Principles

Optical modules use light sources such as LEDs or lasers to transmit information. The encoding process involves mapping user data into code bits, which are then modulated onto the optical carrier. Common modulation strategies include:

  • Intensity Modulation (IM): The light's brightness varies according to the signal, widely used in optical communication due to simplicity and high data rates .
  • Phase Modulation (PM): The phase of the optical wave is altered to represent information, enabling coherent detection and higher spectral efficiency .
  • Polarization or Wavelength Modulation: Information is encoded by changing the polarization state or wavelength of the light, useful in multiplexing and advanced communication systems .
  • Multi-dimensional Encoding: In imaging or advanced sensing, optical signals can be encoded in multiple photon tags (e.g., spatial, temporal, spectral dimensions) to increase information density and improve reconstruction accuracy .

Optical Encoders in Motion Sensing

In optical encoders, mechanical motion is converted into electrical signals using light modulation. The key components include a light source, a code disk or scale, and a photodetector array. The encoding method relies on:

  • Quadrature Encoding: Two signals (A and B channels) are generated with a 90° phase difference. This allows determination of both position and direction of motion, effectively quadrupling the resolution compared to single-channel encoding .
  • Incremental and Absolute Encoding: Incremental encoders output pulses corresponding to displacement, while absolute encoders provide a unique code for each position, often using serial protocols like SSI, BiSS, or EnDat .
  • Sine/Cosine Interpolation: Analog sinusoidal signals from photodetectors are processed to achieve sub-micron resolution, improving accuracy in high-precision applications .

Implementation Considerations

The choice of encoding method depends on the application:

  • Communication Systems: High-speed optical links favor intensity or phase modulation with error-correcting codes to ensure data integrity .
  • Imaging and Sensing: Multi-dimensional or phase-based encoding improves spatial resolution and signal recoverability .
  • Motion Control: Quadrature and sine/cosine encoding provide precise feedback for CNC machines, robotics, and automation systems .
