Installation Process of Matrix Fiber Optic Sensor

Proper installation of Matrix fiber optic sensors involves careful surface preparation, adhesive bonding or embedment, and protective measures to ensure accurate strain measurements.

Surface Preparation

Before installing a fiber optic sensor, the substrate must be cleaned, abraded, and conditioned to ensure strong adhesion and accurate strain transfer. This process is similar to preparing surfaces for foil strain gauges. Remove dust, oils, and contaminants, and if necessary, neutralize the surface to optimize bonding performance .

Adhesive Bonding

For permanent surface installations, epoxy adhesives such as M-Bond 200 or AE-10 are commonly used. These adhesives provide strong adhesion and are suitable for a wide temperature range. Apply the adhesive evenly along the fiber path, then allow it to cure fully according to the manufacturer's instructions. After curing, a protective layer such as RTV silicone can be applied to shield the fiber from environmental factors like moisture, temperature fluctuations, and mechanical abrasion .

Tape Installation

For temporary or non-critical applications, double-sided tape can be used to secure the fiber. While this method is faster, it is less reliable, as temperature and humidity changes may cause the tape to peel off .

Fiber Embedment

In civil engineering or concrete applications, fibers can be embedded directly into the material during casting. This method ensures excellent strain transfer and long-term durability. Care must be taken to avoid fiber breakage and to maintain proper alignment during embedment .

Routing and Strain Relief

Proper fiber routing is essential to prevent excessive bending or tension, which can affect measurement accuracy. Include strain relief loops at key points to accommodate thermal expansion and mechanical movement. Avoid sharp bends and ensure the fiber is not under tension during installation .

High-Resolution Considerations

Matrix fiber optic sensors often provide high-density sensing points with resolutions as fine as 1.6–6.4 mm. To achieve accurate distributed strain measurements, maintain consistent bonding along the fiber and avoid gaps or uneven adhesive application .

Environmental Protection

After installation, protect the fiber from harsh environmental conditions. Use coatings, protective tubing, or encapsulation as needed, especially in outdoor or industrial environments. This ensures long-term reliability and prevents signal degradation .

Summary

  1. Prepare the surface thoroughly (clean, abrade, condition).
  2. Choose the appropriate adhesive or embedment method.
  3. Apply adhesive evenly and allow proper curing.
  4. Use protective layers or coatings for environmental protection.
  5. Route fibers carefully with strain relief to prevent damage.
  6. Verify installation quality to ensure accurate, high-resolution measurements. Following these steps ensures that Matrix fiber optic sensors provide reliable, high-fidelity strain data for structural monitoring, aerospace, civil engineering, or other applications.
