Electrical-to-Optical Signal Conversion

Optical transmission begins by converting electrical signals into light pulses using a transmitter, typically a laser diode or LED. Laser diodes are preferred for high-speed, long-distance networks due to their coherent, focused light, while LEDs are used for shorter-range applications. The data is encoded onto the light through modulation, which can involve turning the light on and off or altering its amplitude, frequency, or phase. At the receiving end, a photodetector such as a photodiode converts the light back into an electrical signal for processing by electronic devices, completing the electromagnetic-to-optical conversion cycle .

Influence of External Electromagnetic Fields

Although optical fibers are dielectric and generally immune to EMI, external electromagnetic fields can still affect them under certain conditions. For example, lightning, high-voltage lines, or nuclear events can induce rotation of the light's polarization plane through Kerr and Faraday effects, particularly in fibers without metallic components. This can lead to signal degradation or failure in polarization-sensitive equipment like Raman amplifiers .

RF Emissions from Fiber Components

While the fiber itself does not radiate RF energy, connectors and small metallic parts such as ferrules, springs, or crimp rings can re-radiate electromagnetic signals due to capacitive coupling. At high data rates (above 1 Gbps), this can result in measurable RF emissions, potentially affecting compliance with FCC or European EMC standards . Proper shielding and design adjustments can mitigate these emissions.

Practical Considerations

  • Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) systems using GPON or XPON technology minimize electrical components between the central office and the home, reducing EMI exposure .
  • Hybrid systems that combine fiber with copper wiring (FTTC) may transmit EMI into homes if metallic sheaths are present.
  • Polarization-sensitive applications should consider environmental electromagnetic influences, especially in high-altitude or mountainous regions where lightning-induced gamma emissions may be stronger .
