Key Performance Parameters

Insertion Loss (IL): This measures the signal power attenuation caused by the connector, typically expressed in decibels (dB). Lower IL indicates better performance. Standard connectors usually maintain ≤0.5 dB, while high-quality single-mode connectors can achieve <0.1 dB for loss-sensitive applications like quantum communications . Return Loss (RL): RL quantifies the amount of light reflected back toward the source. Higher RL values indicate minimal reflection, reducing interference. Typical PC connectors have RL around -30 dB, UPC connectors exceed 50 dB, and APC connectors can reach -60 dB . Alignment Precision: Connectors rely on ferrules (commonly zirconia ceramic) to align fiber cores accurately. Misalignment can increase IL and reduce RL. Ferrule end-face polishing (PC, UPC, APC) optimizes optical contact and minimizes reflection . Durability and Mating Cycles: Connectors are designed for repeated connections and disconnections. High-quality connectors maintain stable IL and RL over hundreds to thousands of mating cycles, ensuring long-term reliability . Mechanical and Environmental Stability: Connector housings are made from high-strength polymers or metals to withstand mechanical stress, temperature variations, and vibration. Coupling mechanisms (latch, push-pull, screw, or bayonet) ensure secure connections .
