Fiber optic connectors are classified based on transmission medium, structural design, and coupling mechanisms, with common types including FC, SC, ST, LC, D4, DIN, MU, and MT.

Classification by Transmission Medium

Fiber optic connectors can be categorized according to the type of fiber they connect:

  • Single-mode connectors: Designed for long-distance communication, carrying a single light mode with minimal dispersion.
  • Multimode connectors: Used for shorter distances, supporting multiple light modes, typically in LANs or data centers.
  • Plastic optical fiber connectors: Less common, used in low-cost or short-range applications .

Classification by Structural Design

Connectors are also classified by their physical structure and ferrule design:

  • FC (Ferrule Connector): Features a metal sleeve and turnbuckle fastening; early versions used flat end faces, later improved with PC (Physical Contact) or UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) polishing for better return loss .
  • SC (Subscriber Connector): Rectangular push-pull design with a 2.5 mm ferrule; widely used in FTTH and data centers .
  • ST (Straight Tip): Bayonet-style connector with a 2.5 mm ferrule, commonly used in multimode networks.
  • LC (Lucent Connector): Small form-factor connector with a 1.25 mm ferrule, ideal for high-density applications and duplex connections .
  • D4, DIN, MU, MT: Specialized connectors for industrial, high-density, or multi-fiber applications, each with unique ferrule and coupling designs .

Classification by Coupling Mechanism

Connectors can also be distinguished by how they mate:

  • Push-pull: SC and LC connectors use a simple push-pull mechanism for easy insertion and removal.
  • Screw-on or turnbuckle: FC connectors use a threaded mechanism for secure connections.
  • Bayonet: ST connectors use a twist-and-lock bayonet system for stability .

Common Structural Components

Despite variations, most fiber optic connectors share four essential parts:

  1. Ferrule: Holds and aligns the fiber core for precise light transmission.
  2. Connector body: Provides structural support and houses the ferrule.
  3. Attachment mechanism: Ensures secure mating with another connector or adapter.
  4. Boot: Protects the fiber and provides strain relief .

Polishing Types

The connector end face is polished to reduce insertion loss and back reflection:

  • PC (Physical Contact): Basic curved end face for minimal air gaps.
  • UPC (Ultra Physical Contact): Enhanced polish for lower return loss.
  • APC (Angled Physical Contact): Angled end face to further reduce back reflection, commonly used in RF video and GPON networks . Understanding these classifications helps in selecting the appropriate connector for specific network requirements, ensuring low insertion loss, high return loss, and compatibility with equipment and patch panels.
