Internal Components and Working Principle

The module typically contains two main assemblies:

  • TOSA (Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly): Converts electrical signals into optical signals for transmission over fiber. It uses light-emitting components such as laser diodes (LDs) or LEDs, with LDs being standard for gigabit speeds due to their coherent light and long-distance capability .
  • ROSA (Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly): Converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals. It includes a photodetector (PIN or APD diode) and a transimpedance amplifier (TIA). APD diodes enhance sensitivity for long-distance or low-light applications, while PIN diodes are cost-effective for shorter distances . The module operates at gigabit speeds (1 Gbps) and supports standards like 1000BASE-SX, 1000BASE-LX/LH, and 1000BASE-ZX, making it compatible with Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and other high-speed protocols .
