About Relay Protection

Relay protection is a critical system in electrical networks that detects faults and abnormal conditions, isolating affected components to ensure safety, reliability, and continuity of power supply.

Working Principle

A protective relay continuously monitors electrical quantities such as current, voltage, frequency, and power. When a fault occurs, the relay detects abnormal values and sends a trip signal to a circuit breaker, which disconnects the faulty section from the healthy system. Relays do not interrupt current directly; they rely on instrument transformers (CTs and PTs) to measure system parameters and initiate the trip action .
