High-speed optical cables are produced through a precision-driven process that transforms ultra-pure silica into fiber strands, which are coated, bundled, and encased to enable terabit-level data transmission.

Raw Materials and Preform Production

The production begins with ultra-pure silica, typically derived from silicon tetrachloride (SiCl₄), with additives like germanium tetrachloride (GeCl₄) to adjust the refractive index of the fiber core, and fluorine compounds to modify the cladding for optimal light confinement . These chemicals are converted into a glass preform, a cylindrical rod that serves as the precursor for fiber drawing. The preform's purity is critical, as even trace impurities like hydroxyl ions or metals can increase signal attenuation and reduce transmission efficiency .

Fiber Drawing and Coating
