Function and Importance

Types of Fiber Lenses

  4. GRIN (Gradient-Index) Lenses: These lenses have a refractive index that varies radially, allowing collimation or focusing of light directly from the fiber end. They are commonly used in fiber collimators and compact optical assemblies .

Fabrication Techniques

Fiber lenses can be fabricated using several methods:

  • Laser shaping: Heating the fiber tip with a CO₂ laser to form a convex or spherical shape.
  • Tapering: Pulling the fiber to reduce diameter and then shaping the tip.
  • 3D printing / two-photon polymerization: Depositing and solidifying lens material directly on the fiber end.
  • Etching and polishing: Precision shaping for high-quality optical surfaces .
